Merritt didn’t care for pageantry, which was always the order of the evening when a séance was happening. As he strode through the Adelphi Hotel’s doors that evening, clad in his only evening clothes, he thought about how he’d certainly endured worse methods of investigating over the course of his career. At least he would have Ivy on his arm for the night. That as a thought that would never cease to set his mind at ease.

He almost didn’t recognize her when she walked—-no, sailed—into the Adelphi’s lobby. He could’ve sworn all conversation ceased for a moment as she made her entrance. His heart stopped for a few beats as he took her in, a vision in a deep green dress the color of jade and matching fur cape. The color matched her eyes almost perfectly. Her dark hair was unbound, arranged in curls that cascaded over her shoulders and down her back. A green hat with a net half-veil was pinned to it that gave her a slightly mysterious air.

“How did I do with my disguise?” she asked breathlessly, hardly able to suppress her grin.

It took a moment for him to find his voice. “You look beautiful.” He couldn’t help the words. He wasn’t sure he wanted to. They were true. Something flickered across her features that he couldn’t identify.

“But do I look like me? Would Mr. Penright recognize me if he saw me in the back of an auditorium?”

Once again, it took a few seconds for her words to register. “No.” He might notice her for other reasons, the same ones that every man in the lobby right now did. “Where did you find this?”

“I rented it from a shop the hotel recommended. It was either this or a pink and gold ball gown,” she said. She looped her hand through his arm and let him guide her out of the hotel. “I would’ve liked to wear the ball gown. I miss wearing colors.”

“Colors suit you.” They walked into the cool night air and he whistled for a passing cab to stop. It rolled to a halt at the curb, steam issuing from its vents.

“Speaking of suits, it’s nice to see you in one.”

He’d be damned if that compliment didn’t make him want to lift the veil away from her face to kiss her. Instead, he gave her hand an affectionate squeeze as he helped her into the cab’s seat before climbing in next to her.

The cab left them at a new-looking building in Bold Street whose painted door sign announced it to be the Liverpool Museum of the Paranormal. A few people were letting themselves into the building, taking no notice of Merritt and Ivy. He hoped his contempt for it didn’t show on his face.

Evidently, it did. “You look like you want to kick it,” murmured Ivy as she adjusted her cape around her shoulders.

“I sort of do.” The building was too ostentatious for his taste, its green glass windows flanked by small gargoyles on either side.
